The construction industry has, over the years, built the community in which we all live. From small cottage conversions to office tower blocks, from footpaths to airports, railways and roads, construction workers of all types strive to improve our living and working conditions and our landscape. Thousands of young people enter this industry annually.

Building and construction may be:

residential - from individual houses to large estates and blocks of apartments
offices - small offices or large tower blocks in central London
prestige projects such as the Scottish Parliament and the Millennium Stadium
railways, roads and airports
dams, power stations and offshore installations
renovation work on old buildings, churches and cathedrals.
Many people in construction work around 37 hours a week, often with overtime. Those on major projects may at times have to work very long hours to meet deadlines. Working conditions range from comfortable offices to dusty, muddy building sites, which may be very hot in summer and cold in winter. The industry employs over 1.5 million people and is growing, needing almost 80,000 new entrants each year.
