Transport
is a service industry - it does not deliver a product,
rather it provides a service to its customers - the
community. Logistics is the organisation of transport,
services and supplies. The range of jobs available in
this industry is large, from those that require only
energy and commitment to those that demand the highest
professional qualifications. They include:
road - drivers of all types of vehicle, mechanics,
engineers, clerks, managers
rail - train drivers, conductors, electrical, mechanical
and civil engineers and technicians, managers
air - pilots, reservations and cabin staff, engineers
and baggage handlers
sea - merchant navy ratings, deck and engineering officers,
port operatives
support services - couriers, post office services, warehouse
staff, freight forwarders, importer/exporters.
Most organisations involved in transport work continuously
around the clock, every day of the year and people employed
in the industry must be prepared to work shifts, weekends
and public holidays.
