If you are a part time H.E. student, financial help is available towards your tuition fees and other course costs, the amount you receive will depend upon your personal circumstances and the course you choose. Your University or college decides how much the tuition fees are for part time courses: there is no minimum or maximum amount. If you study part time it is assumed that you'll meet your living costs through work and savings, but if you are on a lower income you may be able to get financial support aimed at helping you pay tuition fees and course related costs.
The main sources of help for part time students are: a fee grant ( to help with tuition fees) paid directly to your university or college and a course grant (to help with study costs) and paid directly to you. What is available will depend on your circumstances and your course, however you will not have to repay any fee or course grant.
If you get certain benefits you will automatically qualify for the maximum fee and course grant. If you have a live - in partner or dependent children the maximum household income you can have and still qualify, is set higher.
The maximum fee grant you get is based on how 'intensive' your course is - how long it takes to complete compared with an equivalent full time course. For the most intensive course, the maximum is currently £1435 - this is for the course and fee grant combined. It is quite difficult to work out exactly how much money you will get but you need to check if you and your course qualify for grants; how intensive your course is; if you are on qualifying benefits; if you have a partner check if their income is taken into account; work out your income and adjust for children and dependants. You can apply using form PTG1.
You may also get extra help by contacting the Educational Guidance Advisory Service.
Your college or University may also run an Additional Fee Support Scheme, and you may be eligible if you have a low income; your course takes no longer than twice as long as the equivalent full time course; you get Fee Grant but it does not fully cover your fees and you cannot apply or continue without extra help.
Additional help may also be available through the Access to Learning Fund.
As a part time student you may be able to claim income related benefits - fee or course grants are not counted as income.
If no Government help is available you may get a Career Development Loan.
Finance for part time Initial Teacher Training Courses is different.
