what to study
Obviously your choice of future career will influence what subjects you wish to study, but it useful to be aware of which industries and businesses, in the Thames Gateway area, are likely to expand in the future. Considering these may increase your chances of getting a job when you obtain your qualifications.

Three main areas for expansion have been identified in the Thames Gateway:

In High Tech. manufacturing industries there are shortages of electronic engineers and to a lesser extent manufacturing staff; pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and health related manufacturing are others skills required.

In the distribution industry there are shortfalls in people with I.T., manufacturing and supervisory skills, marketing, technical skills and customer services. Many people in this area work as drivers and because of new regulations will need updated skills and qualifications.

There is also a particular need for professional and managerial staff in the Business and Financial Services sector.

Potential growth areas for the future include the creative industries; energy and fuel; I.C.T./Communications; life sciences and tourism and leisure and culture. Other areas which are not developing quite so fast but have reasonable job prospects are: construction; engineering; other manufacturing; hotels and catering;education; health services and public administration.
